EXHIBITIONS

Within the aim of promoting ancient, medieval, and the more recent history, art, and civilisation of Cyprus, the Centre undertakes the organisation of exhibitions both in Cyprus and abroad, in collaboration with foreign public authorities or private initiatives. Within this framework, the following exhibitions have been held:


ICONES BYZANTINES DE CHYPRE, 12E-19E SIECLE

Held in the Foyer des Ministres, Council of Europe (European Palace)

Strasbourg, 19 – 21 March 1991

Organised in collaboration with the Municipality and the Bishopric of Limassol and the Permanent Representation of Cyprus at the Council of Europe. Inaugurated by the Ambassador of Cyprus, Mr Alekos Shampos.Hhkhh Curated by Dr S. Sophocleous.

POST-BYZANTINE AND CONTEMPORARY ICONS OF LIMASSOL

Held in the Municipal Gallery of Limassol, 9 July – 10 August 1990.

Organised in collaboration with the Municipality and the Bishopric of Limassol within the framework of the Week of Byzantine Art and Civilisation of the 25th Limassol Festival. Inaugurated by the Mayor of Limassol, Antonis Hadjipavlou. Curated by Dr S. Sophocleous.


 

LA FRANCE AUX PORTES DE LORIENT, CHYPRE XIIE-XVE SIECLE

Held in the medieval castle of Paphos in September 1992.
Held also at the city of Hyènes in France, May 1992.

Organised in collaboration with the Municipality of Paphos within the framework of the Festival of Paphos 1992. Inaugurated by the Minister of Education, Mr Christophides, and the Mayor of Paphos, Mr Atalliotis. Curated by Dr S. Sophocleous.

A LIMAGE DE DIEU. ICONES BYZANTINES DE CHYPRE

Held at the city of Mulhouse (Temple Saint-Étienne) in July-August, 1994

and at Strasbourg (Église Saint-Thomas) in September-October, 1994

Organised in collaboration with the Bishopric of Limassol and the local municipal and ecclesiastical authorities at Strasbourg and Mulhouse, and under the auspices of the Secretary General of the Council of Europe Mme Catherine Lalumière. Inaugurated by the Mayors of Mulhouse and Strasbourg. Curated by Dr S. Sophocleous and Dr D. Constantinides.

THE ANASTASTIOS G. LEVENTIS FOUNDATION AND CULTURAL
HERITAGE OF CYPRUS 

Held at the Anastasios G. Leventis Foundation, Nicosia, 1996

Organised in collaboration with the Anastasios G. Leventis Foundation on the occasion of the inauguration of the headquarters of the Anastasios G. Leventis Foundation in Nicosia. Opened by the President of the Republic of Cyprus, His Exellency Mr Glafkos Clerides, on the 3 October 1996. A booklet on the activities of the Leventis Foundations in Nicosia and London was published. Curated by Dr S. Sophocleous.

CYPRUS THE HOLY ISLAND ICONS THROUGH THE CENTURIES,
10th - 20th CENTURY

Held at the Hellenic Centre, London, 31 October – 17 December 2000

Organised by the Centre of Cultural Heritage in collaboration with the Hellenic Centre in London, the A. G. Leventis Foundation in London, and the Greek Orthodox Archbishopric of Thyateira and Great Britain.

Sixty-seven icons from Cyprus dating from the 10th to the 20th century were exhibited, thus covering a representative spectrum of late first and second-millennia icon-painting in Cyprus. This was the biggest exhibition of Cypriot icons ever held abroad. It constituted the great event for the Greek Orthodox Archbishopric of Thyateira and Great Britain on the occasion of the completion of two thousand years of Christianity and the beginning in the third millennium.

Inaugurated by Grigorios, Archbishop of Thyateira and Great Britain, and the Minister of Education and Culture Mr Ouranios Ioannidis, on 31 October 2000.
